As someone who humbly considers himself a cinephile not only because I’ve watched well over a thousand films during the last 35 years, but also because I’ve taken a couple of film courses and written numerous reviews across many platforms back when reading reviews was still popular let’s begin.
Today, I’m talking about The Odyssey by one of my favorite directors, Christopher Nolan.
When writing a review about anything, it’s often easier to be critical than supportive. In Nolan’s case, however, it’s genuinely difficult to be overly critical, especially with so many classics already under his belt.
Let’s start with the easy, uncomplicated part: the production and technical aspects. In the modern era of filmmaking, I believe Nolan is second to none. He excels at choosing the right department heads and crew members, and there is honestly very little to comment on in that regard. It’s simply flawless. If there is a tiny error or a goofy moment as some platforms or critics might call it it almost never exists in a Nolan film.
So, let’s talk about the plot, dialogue, and the actors’ performances.
When it comes to the plot, although I’m an avid fan of Greek mythology and generally favor a faithful adaptation, I really don’t mind slight changes. After all, even if Homer himself wrote his epic based on true events, he certainly wasn’t being completely faithful to the original events. If you want to compare The Odyssey to other Greek mythology-themed films such as Troy, or even previous adaptations of The Odyssey, I think that’s unfair to all of them. They were made in different periods, with different filmmaking techniques, different technologies, and different creative approaches. To be honest, none of them has ever been 100% faithful to Homer’s masterpiece.
From my perspective, Nolan remained true to the essence of Odysseus’ journey and that of his crew throughout the vast majority of the film, with a few tweaks here and there, particularly towards the ending. The writing was spot on, but for dialogue to truly work, chemistry between the characters is essential.
Take Matt Damon, for example. You can genuinely feel the bond and mutual respect between him and the actors portraying his crew. Every scene convinces you that he is their leader. The connection between Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland, however, never felt entirely authentic, and among the entire cast, Holland comes across as the weakest link in a few scenes.
On the other hand, the on-screen reunion between Charlize Theron and Matt Damon is simply wonderful. You can genuinely feel the heartfelt connection between their characters. Robert Pattinson absolutely nailed his role as the pathetic, cowardly villain, delivering exactly the kind of performance the character demanded.
That chemistry, combined with such well-written dialogue, naturally leads to brilliant performances across the board. Whether in leading or supporting roles, every actor delivers with conviction and helps bring Nolan’s vision to life.
